MEMBERS of the Westbury community were were awarded for their hard work and dedication at the Mayor's civic reception and awards dinner on Friday (February 23) evening.

More than 80 guests were invited to the evening where Westbury Mayor, Cllr Gordon King presented the awards to the worthy winners.

The Westbury and district French twinning association were presented with the organisation award.

"They have been brilliant, not once has the reputation of our town been put in danger or any dispute been upheld.”

Jean Drew from the twinning association said: “I am so pleased the association has been given the award,we do it for our own enjoyment as well as helping the town

An individual award was Terry Dowell from the town's Cancer Research committee.

Cllr King said: “Terry does a great job behind the scenes of the Cancer Research Committee and he transports all the equipment. He is a vital part of our charity work and brings everything together.

Mr Dowell said: “I am very humbled to have received the award and I was also very surprised.

“I am like a cog in a big wheel which makes our Cancer Research Committee work, and if it wasn’t for all the other people it couldn’t work either, so I accepted this award on behalf of the whole team.”

Another individual award went to Daphne Lyons for her work with White Horse Day Centre.

Cllr King said: “Daphne was presented with this life time achievement award for all the work she has done with the elderly and young people.

“She has boundless energy and her commitment to her service has been incredible.

“Although from London, she whole heartedly adopted Westbury.”

Mrs Lions said: “This is my second civic award but I was just so surprised to have been given it, I thought it would go to someone else.

“I have really enjoyed working in Westbury.”

A forth award was presented to Sandra Pearce for her work at Westbury Swimming Club.

Cllr King said: "The evening was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed."
