A Westbury town councillor has donated a banana tree to residents living on a housing estate in the town.

Mike Cuthbert-Murray, who has been on the town council since 2007 and owns the Banana Blues hairdressing salon in Westbury High Street, donated the tree to Selwood Housing tenants in Haynes Road and Jubilee Close for their new patio area.

He said: "It was a great pleasure to be able to plant the banana tree for Haynes Road residents. I hope they get as much pleasure from watching it grow.

“This garden is a fantastic community project and a real example of how society comes together to enjoy life. I am sure it is going to go from strength to strength.”

Scott Kinnaird, a resident of Haynes Road, was grateful for the kind gift.

He said: “The banana tree is a striking addition to the garden as it is quite unique. It gives the garden a tropical feel and makes it seem more summery. We are hoping that it will provide shade to the patio area once it grows a bit taller.”

Chairman of Selwood Housing, John Alford, added: “We are pleased to have been able to support our tenants with this project. The patio area, and now the banana tree, has come about directly as a result of consulting our tenants and finding out what they want. We are happy to know they are enjoying their garden.”
