Actress urges commuters to support the Poppy Appeal

To raise awareness of the campaign to raise £1million in a day, Barbara Windsor will be encouraging First Great Western passengers to donate to London Poppy Day.

An announcement recorded by the veteran British actor and national treasure is to be played at key London orbital stations tomorrow as groups of serving and ex-service volunteers collect at mainline and tube stations during the morning and evening peaks.

To support the day FGW will be encouraging colleagues who have served in the Armed Forces to wear their medals to work on 31 October and 1 November as well as providing free travel to serving, uniformed personnel travelling on FGW services to collection events in the capital.

Barbara Windsor said: “I’m thrilled to be standing shoulder to shoulder with those who serve and helping to raise awareness of London Poppy Day. It’s an absolute honour to be the voice of the Tube and Trains on the day.”

The Royal British Legion’s director of fundraising Chris Byrne said: “At a time when pride in the capital has never been higher, London Poppy Day is a chance for Londoners to show their support and gratitude for those who serve.

" Every year we have more than doubled the amount raised on the day. In 2011 we hit £450,000 – and this year we’re aiming to hit £1 million.

“Barbara is a much-loved Londoner and we’re delighted to have her support on the biggest London Poppy Day to date.”
