People are being warned to take care while travelling over the next two days following heavy rain across the county, which left many roads under water.

The weather, heightened by strong winds today, left motorists struggling to take their normal routes to work and home, with traffic gridlock being reported all over Wiltshire.

On Thursday the Environment Agency issued flood warnings for parts of Trowbridge around the Paxcroft Brook and Lambrok Stream, while there were also problems in Melksham, Holt, Malmesbury, Box, Sutton Benger and other parts of the county.

Freshford Primary School fell victim to the torrential rain across Wiltshire on Wednesday, after flooding meant the school was forced to close at 12.15pm.

Both the school and its car park flooded during the morning and teaching staff, who were forced to rescue their cars, took the decision to evacuate the building and send pupils home early.

Earlier in the day, a high wall opposite the school, near Bradford on Avon, had collapsed, with debris blocking path and falling on a parked car.

Office buildings in Brook Lane, Holt, were flooded on Wednesday. Staff used sandbags to divert water and a fire crew from Trowbridge were called around 2pm to pump it out.

A fire crew from Chippenham used an Aquavac to pump flood water from a property at 10.25am in Station Road, Corsham, while a crew in Corsham spent an hour diverting water from a garage and a conservatory in Ashley, Box.

In Bradford on Avon, a fire engine became stuck in water blocking Rushey Lane and had to be rescued using a vehicle winch, while on Winsley Road a crew from Melksham were called to redirect water building up behind an unstable wall at 1.15pm.

A Melksham fire crew were called to house floods at Folly Lane and a ground floor property on Woodrow Road, where officers had to pump water out.

A fire crew had to rescue someone stuck in a car stranded in water on Mill Lane, Broughton Gifford and one crew from Warminster pumped out floodwater in the hall and lounge of a property on May Lane, Yarnbrook at 1.40pm.

There were also reports of flooding around Corsham Road and Westbury, primarily on the A3098 Tower Hill.

A spokesman for The Environment Agency urged motorists to drive with caution as there is a still lot of surface water on the roads.

He added: “There is likely to be more inclement weather up until Sunday and we could possibly get as much as 60 millimetres of rain water in the next few days.

“With the bad weather set to continue, we would ask drivers to be extra vigilant and stay away from any main streams of water.”

Wiltshire Council issued a statement to say the highways team was working hard with colleagues in the emergency services to clear any flooding.

Should anyone being experiencing any flooding which is either affecting property or causing issues on the roads, they should call 0800 232323 from a landline or 01225 777234 from a mobile phone.
