Wiltshire stores say they are expecting to register a trade boost from the January sales, with more than 2,000 customers visiting the Leekes Store in Melksham to bag a Boxing Day bargain.

There were dozens of people queuing outside the family-run business, in Beanacre Park, when it opened at 10am and turnover was up 20 per cent on the previous Boxing Day.

The store also enjoyed increased online sales as customers took advantage of half-price offers on kitchens, sofas, bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as smaller items such as kettles and toasters.

Emma Leeke, its managing director, said: “We are absolutely delighted to report that the Boxing Day trading figures for our Melksham store completely exceeded expectations.

“Current market reports for 2013 are indicating that Wiltshire homeowners will still be improving, rather than moving, so we’re incredibly excited to see what the year ahead will bring.

“We pride ourselves on offering everything for the home, all under one roof, so we are looking forward to welcoming even more new faces through the doors over the coming days, weeks and months, as customers from the surrounding area pop in to see what we have to offer.”

In Trowbridge HJ Knee, in Fore Street, is also holding a sale which its management believe will give the business a good start to the New Year.

Manager Alex Huscroft said: “Following a busy Christmas, we have made a good start to 2013 and we have some very good lines on furniture and pans on offer.

“We’d really like to thank our loyal customers for supporting us all year round.”
