Gym club has permission to build new hall

Expansion plans submitted by Wiltshire School of Gymnastics, for its premises in Lysander Road, Bowerhill, have been successful.

The charity-run club’s application for a new gymnastics hall, equipment store and meeting rooms was approved by Wiltshire Council on January 3.

Derek Phillips, the chairman of trustees for the club, said: “We were looking at expanding the gym, due to an increase in membership.

“We’re adding another room, so we can have two gyms running at the same time, as we have got a fairly long waiting list.

“We definitely want to open up in September, for the start of the new term.”

Melksham Without Parish Council opposed the plan, over fears about parking.

Council chairman Mike Mills said: “We were worried about the loss of the car parking spaces, because half of the car park will go and there is a major problem all around the estate.

“We get a huge number of cars from the industrial estate parking in the residents’ area. The whole question of parking round the estate needs to be looked at.”
