Blood donors from Wiltshire have been honoured by the NHS Blood and Transplant team for their years of commitment.

The efforts of the 30 people, 14 of them from Wiltshire, who have helped save up to 3,150 lives between them, were marked with crystal awards handed out at the Manor House Hotel in Castle Combe.

One of those honoured, Lilian Pike, of Trowbridge, said: “One of my friends was involved in a serious accident and I thought it was my duty to give blood, even though I have a fear of needles.”

Each blood donation can potentially help three people. Out of those eligible to give blood, only three per cent, including Mrs Pike, manage to make 75 donations.

Geraldine Parker, lead donor relations manager for Wiltshire, said: “The majority of these donors have given blood three times a year for the last 25 years, which is an amazing achievement.”
