Wiltshire fire service trio tackle Dartmoor fundraiser
9:36am Monday 16th September 2013 in Wiltshire
Three Wiltshire firefighters are taking on a rigorous charity challenge by trekking 30 miles across Dartmoor National Park on Saturday.
Chippenham station commander Damien Bence, Trowbridge watch manager Lucy May and her colleague Jon Salisbury will be tackling the annual Commando Shuffle raising funds for The Fire Fighters Charity and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.
The route is the same one which Royal Marines officers have to complete as part of their training in seven and a half hours with the three firefighters aim to complete it in around nine hours.
Mr Bence, 39, said: “We did it last year and we have made sure that we have trained hard as we know just how gruelling it was. The terrain across Dartmoor is hard as there are rocks, hills and clumps of grass 2ft high which need to be negotiated.
“It is not an easy task and one of the important factors is making sure our navigation is spot-on as you don’t want to end up going in the wrong direction.”
The trio will be beginning the event at around 6am in the morning and will be carrying extra previsions such as sleeping bags and supplies in case they go off course.
Mr Bence said: “To be safe you have to carry all the extra kit even though you’d like to think you won’t need it. This isn’t an easy task to begin with but carrying the extra stuff makes it harder.
“We’ll be there for each other and work together as a team. Our aim is to raise £1,000 to be split between the charities but whatever we raise will be appreciated.”
