Bin men facing a bleak new year

bin men will lose their jobs after Wiltshire Council agreed to reform their waste collection services on Tuesday.

The changes, being implemented in two phases, will begin in April with a reduction of four vehicles and 12 staff from the council’s roster. In September, the day of waste collection will change for some residents, with between 15 and 21 further staff being cut.

The council will stop using agency staff with up to 12 council workers also losing their jobs.

In 2014/15, the decision will save £400,000 with expected savings of £700,000 year-on-year.

Wiltshire councillor Toby Sturgis, cabinet member responsible for waste and recycling, said: “We couldn’t let some people go in the summer when the council ran a voluntary redundancy programme but now they’ll have an opportunity to apply again. The changes will allow waste collection to become much more efficient without compromising the service.”

Coun Sturgis said that a reform had been considered since April 2012, when Wiltshire Council turned waste collections into one central service after adopting four different operations from the region’s former district councils in 2009.

He said: “With the change to collection rounds the service will not be affected.”

A programme of Wiltshire Council voluntary redundancies among waste services staff, will take place in the middle of 2014 in preparation for the September changes.

In the second phase of the reforms, the council will also implement ‘fixed compressed hours’ for drivers and loaders. This will mean staff will continue to work 37 hours per week but they would work four days per week instead of five – resulting in a longer working day.

Coun Sturgis said: “This does not mean that overtime will necessarily come to an end as waste collection comes in peaks and troughs.”

Carole Vallelly, GMB union spokesman, said: “It is disturbing that people are going into Christmas not knowing if they’ll have jobs in the new year. I don’t understand how the work will get done in the same amount of time by less people.”

My bin men are fantastic and perhaps if Cllr Sturgess and Jane Scott donned a pair of overalls and went around with them for a week, they would see that the real Workers in Wiltshire earn their pay unlike the Conservative Cabinet.

Ms Scott & Co must think we are daft not to realise that her "decisions" ARE causing DISASTER in Wiltshire ?

The only "over staffing" IS the Leader and Co being allowed to continue to spend and wasteTax Payers money and Government Funding on themselves and their Politics !

I've said it several times and I will say it again......People BEFORE Politics..

Ms Scott...any "Independent Panel" that Wilts Council "use" must NOT consist of fellow Farmers and Politically biased people you know !!

You send out loads of "Resident Surveys" Jane but you NEVER put the People first and you sure as hec do NOT listen to them..

The time has come now that we are all, Residents and Staff alike, asking you to listen to us in persons and.... NO amount of "waffling on to the press" will change the FACT that you, Jane Scott, HAVE been running our County like your own little "Empire"..

You live in "cuckoo land" with your belly and purse full and, you cannot care about the Residents and Staff "let go" who ARE struggling if you continue to cut Services and Jobs ?

Dear Refuse Collector,
Thank you for your loyal service over the years but I regret to inform you that you have been selected for redundancy. It has become necessary for us to save money so we can claim more in expenses ourselves and your department has been chosen to bear the brunt of the cuts. We are sorry that this news has had to come just before Christmas but our plan was to keep it quiet until after the point of no return regarding the expenses rise but unfortunately some local people are unhappy and making lots of noise about it so we need to deflect some publicity and have chosen to tell you now.
Merry Christmas

It wont be long before we are paying the managers and councillors to manage absolutely no services at all so we will get no return from paying Council tax.

Surely if a front line worker goes then so should there be an equal reduction in management and councillors?

Would Cllr Sturgis be available to empty a few bins when they get behind with the rounds?

Please take time to read Jane Scott's "blog" at:

"janewiltsblogspot.c
o.uk"

My "thoughts" are:

Dear Jane...not sure if your card and message was to us Residents or not ?
You seem to be referring to the "workers" and one of my hopes is that you take time over christmas to consider the UTTER devastation that you and your Political Team HAVE caused to the staff that you have "let go" ?
Take time to consider the equally appalling cuts in vital Services that have resulted from your selfish decisions to spend the Funding elsewhere ?
I doubt that very few of the REAL Staff at Wilts Council are "looking forward" to "working with you in January"....
The Residents of Wiltshire, however DO look forward to meeting with you when we come to County Hall in 2014 to ask you for explanations and answers as to WHY we no longer matter.
As you sit down to your christmas dinner, spare a thought for those in Wiltshire who will go without ?
There WILL BE many vulnerable and disabled Residents and Families who have no "luxuries" OR Social Care Services on christmas day and neither will they be in your financial position to be able "do an extra shop at Tesco"..
Jane...also take time to read what you wrote in your "Legacy for Wiltshire Speech ?

Be mindful of the FACT that the Residents of Wiltshire and the front line Staff at the Council HAVE become your VICTIMS........

if there is ONE thing that Wiltshire County Council do properly, it is the Refuse Collection and Recycling.
Why are WCC reducing this? I pay £1800 per year Rates and all I get is my Bin emptied.
What is the drive behind this mad woman? Does she want to get selected as a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate? I just cannot understand it. As she collects the Farmer's Single Payment subsidy from the EU does she feel guilty?

Ah....hope that Cornwall Council are getting "value for money" from that particular chief exective ??......

For whatever it cost our County in pay outs to him, at least he handed BACK his pay rise when Jane Scott dished it out to him..(or so he says !!??...)...

Lets use our Democratic Right NOW to ask Jane Scott and Co all the questions that NEED to be answered before we see the loss of anymore vital Services and valued front line Staff ?

Ms Scott needs to be mindfull that herobsession to "save money" COULD potentially cost Lives ?......

I doubt that when Ms Scott "retires" shewill have to fight for Adult Social Services and no doubt if it snows this winter, she can find a tractor or two to clear the road outside her Farm ?

If she retired now, Ms Scott would quite likely get a hefty Wiltshire Pension Fund Pension unlike the younger Staff who she has "let go" out of pure Political advancement ?

There is NO room in Wiltshire Council for Bullies of any kind..

Ms Scott's and others pay rises would have gone some way to providing the Services that she should be providing as of a Right to us all..

Prioritise, Ms Scott and ...please stop campaigning your Politics at the expense of the People ?..

Wiltshire needs and has a Right to MP's and Cabinets who put the Tax Payers money in the Tax Payers mouths and NOT in their OWN mouths via hikes in Senior Councillor Allowances..
