Following last night’s heavy rainfall across the county, flood warnings remain in place across Wiltshire.

The Environment Agency has warned of a risk of flooding along the River Avon in Bradford on Avon, Malmesbury and Melksham.

Wiltshire remains yellow on a low risk for groundwater - yellow is the lowest warning of ‘be aware’. There is no warning for Saturday currently, but on Sunday there is a wind and rain warning level at yellow.

Over the festive period, Malmesbury and Bradford on Avon both experienced severe flooding, with the latter closed to traffic for four days. Despite the road through the town reopening water levels at the town bridge have remained high.

The deluge of rain falling on already saturated ground is causing concern for businesses in Bradford on Avon, who are still suffering from the Christmas Eve floods.

Funeral director CS Bowyer in The Bull Pit has closed for refurbishment due to the flood damage but is still operating from its Trowbridge and Westbury branches.

Funeral director Neil Crook said: “We hope to get up and running in the next couple of weeks if it doesn’t flood again.

“We have a flood line that rings us when the water reaches a certain level. It is just on the edge at the moment.

“If there are families that want to see us they can come to Trowbridge or Westbury or we can go out to them.”

The Bridge Tea Rooms in Bridge Street reopened on Monday but owner Roy Hayward said: “Yesterday it came up within three feet of coming through the floor.

“Because it comes up through the floor there is nothing we can do about it. The river is very high and if we get a deluge for a couple of days it could be bad, but we have reopened and are fully working.

“It doesn’t look like it is going to end soon. We are stocking up on sand bags and keeping an eye out. I won’t be putting carpets back down anytime soon. We are having to wait until everything is dried out.”

The B3105, near the Cereal Partners UK factory in Staverton, between Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge, is currently closed to traffic following flooding at a nearby bridge.

The Environment Agency is regularly updating its website with areas that are at risk.
