Meeting to challenge Wiltshire councillors' allowances rise

Wiltshire Times: Coun Jane Scott's allowances have risen by 36.5 per cent Coun Jane Scott's allowances have risen by 36.5 per cent

An meeting calling for Wiltshire Council’s controversial allowance increases to be rescinded will be held on Tuesday, February 4.

The matter will be debated as part of their full council meeting taking place at County Hall and will begin at 10.30am.

In November, the council agreed to allowance increases which has seen leader Jane Scott’s allowances rise by 36.5 per cent a year, taking them from £37,335 to £52,227.

Cabinet members’ allowances have increased by at least 22 per cent, rising from £15,101 to £18,433 a year and councillors’ basic allowances have gone up by one per cent to £12,289 a year.

Under their constitution, for Wiltshire Council to debate a decision taken in the previous last six months and potentially overturn it, during a meeting, at least 10 councillors’ signatures are needed.

Wiltshire Councillors Terry Chivers, Jeff Osborn, Helen Osborn, Ernie Clark, all Independent, John Walsh, Ricky Rogers, Ian Tomes, all Labour, Trevor Carbin, Ian West and Brian Dalton all Liberal Democrats have signed the motion.

Coun Chivers said: “It’s clear that we are getting more and more support by the day to try and reverse this decision. I would encourage members of the public to contact their local councillor to ask them to support our motion.”

Coun Osborn said: “The fact that we now have cross party support for this is great news.”

After the council agreed to the allowance increase outraged tax payer Paul Gaunt set up a petition calling for Coun Scott and her cabinet to resign.

This has received more than 2,600 signatures and will be presented to the council during the meeting.

About time, now will someone ask exactly what Jane Scott finds to spend £1000 a week on as per her expenses claims ?

As usual the link given by the Gazette takes to no where, to go straight to the petition use this.

At last, the council meeting to scrap these massive increases for Jane Scott and her magic circle is going ahead. Good news, especially as Wiltshire Council tried to sabotage the originally called meeting by making the day for it Christmas Eve. This was when County Hall was officially closed. What a carve up.

Let us hope that sufficient Wiltshire councillors have the guts to send this group of grabbers and their greed packing.

Could we have a list of who votes for what from this meeting. That's for or against. I would be especially interested in the councillors who abstain or don't turn up as they shouldn't be doing the job if they do not stand up and be counted.

I am sure there will be snouts in all parties?

thanks beetawix, I normally just cut and paste so no wonder it never got a result.

Now I ask why has the gazette put that final dot on? deliberate or sloppy?

Cynical me suspects foul play, or why has the article with 30 comments been removed from the most commented list once again?

The Gazette is showing evermore signs of bias here.
so here is the above link without the dot for anyone who has not yet signed it.

Now, in view of the outrage about this affair will the Gazette have a reporter at this meeting?

Sincere thanks go out to Paul Gaunt for starting the Petition and the non Conservative Councillors who have signed the motion.

Please come to the Meeting if you can and lets all do our best to STOP our County Services being Politically plundered ?

Please also try to attend your Local Area Board Meetings in 2014 as it seems Jane Scott is "showing her face" at various of those Meetings apparently to talk about her "Legacy for Wiltshire"..
You can find Area Board Meetings on the Wiltshire Council Web Site under "Area Boards" and by choosing your Town !..

The most important date for your Diaries IS Tuesday 4th February at 10.30 am at County Hall !!..

The ONLY "legacy" that Ms Scott will be remembered for is for operating our Council as a Political Empire instead of the Public Service that she is paid an Allowance for..

Remember what one person said, “They wanted to make it right, not for me, but for the people who come after me.” If that's the thinking at the top, can't see many of those who voted for it changing their mind. Grab what you can before being kicked out.

Ms Scott must have been having a rather bad "senior moment" when making such a daft comment given that unless she has "mystical powers', she has absolutely NO idea WHO will "come after her"

Lets face it, as long as they are NOT Politically obsessed, care about their County and willing to work for the People and with the People and Staff, then they can only improve on the appalling mess that we have left after the devastation of 'hurricane Jane" ??......

The biggest problem so far is that the "grabbing" HAS involved Tax Payers dosh Awarded in Funding for Services and wasted as a result of Political obsessions and pie in the sky aspirations NOT involving Service Users or the Real Staff..

"Not fit for the purpose" comes to mind...

A respectful reminder goes to Ms Scott that she can leave at any time, and....at least she has, unlike the REAL Staff she "let go", a ready made job to walk into on the farm if she has financially probs or has already spent the pay rise she gave herself.....

It is hard to believe that Ms Scott has found it a "difficult time" since the Press attention regarding her self imposed pay increase ?

What IS a "difficult time" is the one that Residents and REAL Staff are and have been facing since the Conservatives came to the Cabinet..

As there are so many Tory Councillors and if they all attend this meeting one suspects a "block vote" in favour of Scott. If they had any scruples at all they would have voted against the rise in allowances the first time.

I hope the vote is for reversal of this obscene hike out of public money but firstly the rest have to grow some b---s and go against the party line.

The public must be able to see how Councillors voted so at the next election have the opportunity to vote them out. Any other party running the administration couldn't do worse.

It's a pity we don't have the opportunity to 'recall' this batty woman. Petitions are all very well but we need a law to stop her and her band of incompetents continuing their misrule over the people in this County.
It is not democratic to line your own pockets at the expense of services to the needy, it's just plain greed. I hope this debate runs until the next election, then we can boot her and her loony free market friends out.
Can we make her live on 'Benefit Street' I am sure she would be as popular there as she is here!

Good idea "kim" but......sadly the "benefit street programme" FAILS to represent those on Benefits who have to fight to get them because the Conservative Secretary of State has put the wrong Claimants 1st ......

I think it would be great to challenge Jane Scott to a week being Homeless followed by the journey that will take her into trying to get Benefits too !..

I expect that Jane would come up with some "health and safety excuse for not being able to participate"...

What is needed is for a TOTALLY Independant Public Inquiry into the way that Wilts Council have been stopping Benefits for those who ARE Entitled to them including pursuing them through the Courts to pay back dosh that they have NOT been "overpaid"....

The list does not stop at this type of poor Administration and to be clear, the front line Staff cannot be blamed for decisions that are out of their hands and in the hands of the "incentive orientated Cabinet" ?....

Please come to the Meeting at County Hall on Tuesday 4th February at 10.30 am......even if you just turn up and sit and say nothing, the power of the numbers of the REAL people of Wiltshire WILL be taken notice of by he National Newspaper Reporters who hopefully will be there too...

The latest is that Senior Tory minister, Erdcic Pickles, has told Jane Scott not to take her massive increase - go on ton Radio Wiltshire website - and she has replied, "No, its mine and I will have it."

What a fine how do you do.

If I was a Tory parliamentary candidate in 2015, I would start to be worried. She is putting the Tory party and its dwindling supporters in a terrible situation. Will enough of them see the light on 4th February?
