The man killed yesterday while trying to clear a tree that had brought down power cables near Bremhill, Calne, has been identified as a local market gardener.

He has been named locally as Roger Winston Hayward, who was in his early 70s.

Police en route to deal with the fallen tree yesterday afternoon, off the Stanley road near Bremhill, received a 999 call reporting a man had been injured.

Police and paramedics attended but  he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Hayward, a well-known market gardener who supplied Whitehall Garden Centre, had lived on the road where the accident took place for over 20 years, and before that had lived in Pewsham in Chippenham.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "Wiltshire Police can confirm that just after 3.10pm, officers were called to reports of a fallen tree which also brought down power cables in Bremhill, Calne.

“At around 3.20pm, while police response officers were en route we were contacted via 999 again with reports of a man injured at the scene.

“The ambulance service also attended but sadly the man, who was local to the area, was pronounced dead on arrival.

"He was aged in his 70s and his next of kin have been informed.

“Early indication is that the man was attempting to clear the tree and has possibly been electrocuted as a result."

Scottish and Southern Electric were called to the site to make the situation safe.

The road closed sign was still out last night as an electric crew returned for a different job on the same road at 8.30pm.

They said they had been working solidly since 7am yesterday during the stormy weather.
