DETAILS of the route some of the world’s top riders will take through the county during stage six of the Tour of Britain in September have been released.

The 205.7 km stage begins in Bath and ends in Hemel Hempstead on Friday, September 12, with more than 40 miles of it in Wiltshire.

The race, won in 2013 by 2012 Tour De France victor Sir Bradley Wiggins, will wind through streets in Winsley, Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Devizes and Pewsey as well as taking in the likes of Semington, Seend and Chirton.

The stage starts in front of the Royal Crescent in Bath before arriving in Wiltshire at Lower Stoke at around 10.40am. The race continues along the B3108 before reaching the A363 Masons Lane in Bradford on Avon at just after 10.50am.

Riders will make their way along the A363 to the outskirts of Trowbridge at around 10.55am, with Bradford Road, Stallard Street and Bythesea Road closed as they ride through the town centre and onto Hilperton at around 11am.

Semington and Seend are next on the A361 before the next stop Devizes at 11.20am, after which the riders take the A342 before turning onto the A345 and onto Pewsey, arriving in the town at around 11.50am.

The peloton will head out of town on the B3087 before finally turning onto the A338 and out of Wiltshire.

Jane Scott, leader of Wiltshire Council said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the county of Wiltshire to a global audience and we are delighted to host Stage 6 of the tour.

“The Tour of Britain is now one of the major cycling events in the world and the perfect event to continue to encourage people to enjoy the benefits of cycling following the success of the Tour de France in Britain.

“Since 2012, we have recognised the benefits of building a legacy in Wiltshire and we promote a number of beautiful cycling routes across Wiltshire for local communities and visitors to enjoy. We want to continue to boost the local economy and have a host of activities that encourage people to get more active and improve their health and wellbeing.

"I hope this major event will see communities getting involved, like they did when we welcomed the Olympic Torch in 2012, and that they will take the opportunity to showcase what makes them unique. We hope that school children and local people will line the streets and show their support for the cyclists as they pass through our county.”

Hopefully this will encourage the Council to improve the surface of the road from Hilperton to Semington which is in a very poor condition and potentially dangerous for competing cyclists.

No chance grassman, they can't even finish what they have started in Pewsey market place.

Usual bandwagoning BS from Jane Scott.

Jane Scott ought to ride bike along the designated Wiltshire Cycle way and see how pleasurable it is.
Somehow I can't see her on a bike though, perhaps she could ask one of her minions to do it.
