Wiltshire Police are appealing for witnesses after an accident in Devizes last night in which a Westbury man was seriously hurt.

A black Vauxhall Corsa being driven towards Devizes was in collision with a pedestrian - a 49-year-old man from Westbury - on the A361 close to the junction for Foxhangers Marina at about 10.30pm.

Police said it was unclear whether the pedestrian was crossing the road or not but said the collision occurred on the road. The driver of the Corsa was a 57-year-old woman from Melksham who was not hurt.

A paramedic from Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Dr Ed Valentine, a SWIFT medic, attended in a response car and the injured man received critical care at the scene before being taken by land ambulance to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, which is a regional trauma centre.

Police said today that the man remains in a serious but stable condition and appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them immediately.

Officers would also like to speak to anyone who saw a man walking close to the A361, or the black Vauxhall Corsa, immediately before the collision.

Anyone with information should contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously.
