Power was cut in Melksham after a tree fell into an electric cable in Longleaze Lane during this morning's winds and there were also power cuts in Chippenham.

Longleaze Lane was closed to traffic while workmen from Southern Electric Power Distribution carried out repairs.

Power was cut to homes in Wiltshire Crescent and Longleaze Lane.

A statement issued this morning said: "Southern Electric POwer Distribution would like to apologise to all its customers for the disruption, which was caused by the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo.

"Power went off at 09.08 and was restored at 10.51 this morning."

In Chippenham power was cut in Cocklebury and Woodlands Road, where trees were blown into power lines although they did not fall.

After cutting work the electricity supply was restored at 11.45am.

Winds increased across the area today but the worst effects of Hurricane Gonzalo are being felt elsewhere.

Gusts of up to 70mph have been recorded in north Wales and the Isle of Wight, and a Met Office wind warning is in place for much of the UK.

South Western Ambulance Service tweeted: "The strong winds are causing dangerous driving conditions. Please take care on the roads and slow down."
