THE Kennet and Avon Canal has now been reopened after a narrow boat sank in a lock at Widcombe in Bath nearly a fortnight ago.

Removal work started today and it was initially thought that a crane would be needed to remove the boat from the canal.

Instead, the Canal and River Trust confirmed that engineers used a combination of methods to rebalance the boat in the canal, where it is remains.

It was first believed that the boat had been hired for the weekend by a stag party and it is still unknown how many people were on board at the time it sank on November 1.

However, a spokesperson from the trust has said that the people who hired out the boat “were experienced” and that “getting everyone off safely was the main thing.”

The Canal and River Trust said the boat is owned by hire company, Anglo Welsh, and it is believed to have begun its journey from Bradford on Avon.

Anglo Welsh have been unavailable for comment.
