The 19-year-old who died in a car incident in Forest Lane, Melksham, has been named locally as Max Lewis from Seend.

Friends have described Max as a "Jack the lad" and "very popular".

Hundreds of flowers have been left by family and friends at the scene of the crash.

Police are now urging people to come forward with any information they may have, as they believe two cars that did not stop at the scene may have been driven by friends of Max.

PC Peter Williamson said: "Yesterday afternoon [Saturday] before 3pm there was a fatal road traffic collision. Involved in that was a red Saxo and a white van.

"Witnesses travelling from the Lacock direction towards Melksham were overtaken before the collision by three vehicles.

"These three vehicles were travelling close together at speed.

"One was the Saxo, one we believe to be silver, one possibly blue. We haven't had that confirmed.

"A short time later the witnesses came across the Saxo which has lost control for some reason on the bend and collided with a van coming in the opposite direction.

"The front seat passenger was deceased. The driver is critical and was airlifted to Southampton Hospital.

"We desperately need to speak to the other two drivers. Their vehicles were not at the scene. They continued on to Melksham and we have not been able to trace the drivers or the vehicles.

"We believe they all know each other, we also believe members of the local community will know them.

"We are urging either the drivers to come forward themselves or somebody with any information to contact us or Crimestoppers.

"We need them to help us with our investigation to establish what's happened"

The 25-year-old driver of the van from Trowbridge suffered minor injuries and was taken to the RUH in Bath. He has now returned home and will be helping police with enquiries.
