FEARS have been raised that building works at Market Place for the new campus could threaten next year’s Christmas lights switch-on and fair.

It was revealed at Melksham Town Council meeting last week that Wiltshire Council had delayed the start of the building works.

Work at the Market Place was originally due to start in April next year but has been delayed until September.

It is expected to last 18 months and will involve redesigning Market Place for a new access route to the campus.

This could put the Assembly Hall out of action and the lights may not be able to go up for Christmas 2015 or even, if delayed further, Christmas 2016.

Cllr Jon Hubbard described the annual lights switch-on as Melksham’s headline act.

“Melksham lights are the thing people talk about Melksham for,” he said.

The council voted to liaise with Wiltshire Council.

Cllr Hubbard added: “It would be a shame if a slippage in their schedule meant it didn’t go ahead.”
