A signalling problem near Trowbridge meant trains being unable to run between Bath Spa and Westbury early this morning.

First Great Western has now confirmed that the signals are working correctly.

"Services are returning to normal, but there will be residual delays," said a spokesman.

And there was misery for train travellers following delays at Britain's busiest interchange station. The hold-ups in the morning rush-hour were caused by a broken-down train at Clapham Junction in south London.

It was the latest in a series of morning peak delays in recent weeks for commuters who face fare rises of up to 2.5% in just over two weeks.

In Wales a signalling problem near Crosskeys caused delays for those travelling between Ebbw Vale Parkway and Cardiff Central.

Another signalling problem, at Staines in Surrey, led to hold-ups between Windsor & Eton Riverside and Staines.

There was also disruption on London Underground, with a signal system failure causing delays on the Northern line and a signal failure at Turnham Green in west London leading to hold-ups on the Piccadilly line.
