Love was definitely in the air for Matthew Roberts and Ginny Short after they tied the knot on Valentine’s Day in a Jane Austen-style wedding in Corsham.

The pair, from Corfe Road, Melksham, met on a blind date nearly two years ago and Mr Roberts, 38, popped the question at the end of the pier at Weston-super-Mare last March – the place of their first kiss.

Mrs Roberts, 41, said: “Matthew is a true romantic and asked me to marry him on Valentine’s Day. He knows I have a passion for Regency and said, how about we have a Regency ball?”

Guests were asked to dress up in costume and Mr Roberts, a volunteer for Oxfam in Corsham, wore a period suit.

Mrs Roberts, who was a teacher at Corsham Primary School and is now at Forest and Sandridge Primary School in Melksham, wore a pink cape trimmed with fur and a Regency-style gown for the ceremony at Corsham Baptist Church.

The reception was held at Corsham Town Hall, which had been decorated with fairy lights, pink bunting and personal photographs and the ball was led by The Jane Austen Dancers of Bath.

Mrs Roberts said: “In the evening at the ball everyone was dancing, it looked like a scene from Jane Austen.”

Mrs Roberts is the daughter of Jim and Carol Short from Frome and he is the son of Melvyn and Heather Roberts from Taunton.

Her sister Beth was chief bridesmaid and she had five flower girls.

The pair lived in Corsham for nine years and regularly go to Corsham Baptist Church on Sundays. They are going to Italy at Easter for their honeymoon.

Mrs Roberts said: “It was beyond our wildest dreams. I never dreamt I would have a wedding like this, we are still processing it. Everything was absolutely fantastic.”
