SNOW White, Cleopatra and the Fantastic Mr Fox were just some of the characters that teachers and pupils across Wiltshire dressed up as to celebrate World Book Day.

The annual celebration, which took place last Thursday (March 5), saw schools across the county dress as their favourite book character for the day and take part in a range of reading events.

Among the schools dressing up on the day was Oasis Academy Longmeadow, where staff member Sarah Tippetts stood out from the crowd as Wally, while Corsham Primary, The Mead and The Grove School also got involved in the fun.

Debbie Hughes, reading mentor at The Grove Primary School, said: “The whole school has embraced our World Book Day celebrations, from having photographs taken of themselves reading in unusual places to coming to school dressed as their favourite book character.

“Highlighting the link between enjoyment and reading is so important and The Grove is committed to this philosophy.”

Pupils and teachers at Clarendon Academy also got involved in the fancy dress fun, while staff shared readings from their favourite books in the library.

Readings included Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff.

Karen Schneider, resources co-ordinator at Clarendon Academy, said: “To celebrate and promote World Book Day, staff at Clarendon Academy once again made a fantastic effort dressing up as characters from fiction.

“A tutor competition to guess character, text and author followed with prizes awarded for the most accurate answers.

“With characters ranging from Napoleon from Animal Farm to Cleopatra from Antony and Cleopatra it was another successful celebration.”
