HEAVY rainfall is expected across Wiltshire for the next two days as Storm Jonas rolls into the region from across the Atlantic.

Wiltshire has been given a yellow 'be aware' warning by the Met Office as downpours are expected.

Storm Jonas brought America’s East Coast to a standstill when it caused 40 inches of snow to blanket New York City and Washington.

Now as it hits the UK, the snow has turned into torrential rainfall.

Further gales and heavy rain are expected tonight with temperatures expected to drop to nine degrees.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Rain will be heavy and persistent at times during Tuesday and into Wednesday.

"The rain will also be accompanied by south or southwesterly gales and possibly severe gales at times, especially along Irish Sea coasts and over high ground.

"It looks as if the heaviest rain and strongest winds will occur in two main bouts - one late morning and afternoon on Tuesday and another Tuesday night into Wednesday, before clearing to the southeast on Wednesday afternoon.

"Please be aware of the risk of flooding and thus the potential for disruption to travel through this period.

"The weather will remain mild into the evening before rainfall dies down on Thursday. Temperatures will dip to seven degrees but a bright sunny day is to be expected.”

A very windy night with further gales and heavy rain is also expected tonight with temperatures expected to drop to nine degrees.

Last month flooding hit the region as Storm Frank brought heavy rainfall and high winds.

Storm Frank brought torrential rain, flooding, power cuts and winds as high as 70mph to western parts of the UK.
