A MALE driver and three female passengers all suffered serious injuries after a Vauxhall Insignia attempted a U-turn on the A361 near Seend at around 9pm last night.
As the car performed the manoeuvre, it was hit by a 44 tonne Volvo lorry carrying heavy plant machinery, which was travelling in the direction of Semington.
Two fire engines from Trowbridge were tasked with removing the occupants of the car, which rolled three times after being shunted 35 metres along the road.
The driver's injuries are life-threating and his three female passengers, all in their sixties, also suffered serious injuries. They were all taken to Southmead Hospital, Bristol.
Although the paramedic ambulance car was on the scene within minutes, the three land ambulances took over an hour to arrive.
The driver of the Volvo lorry was uninjured but in a state of shock following the incident.
More to follow.
