NINE people from Wiltshire have had to surrender their passports ahead of the European Football Championships.

Thousands of fans across the county are ready to cheer on their national teams at home and abroad during the Euros but those nine will have no choice but to enjoy the action from these shores.

There are 16 people across Wiltshire subject to football banning orders.

Inspector Mark Freeman, who is leading the operation, says: “We are well prepared for events like the European Championships and have a plan in place, which involves additional staff being deployed at certain times over the duration of the tournament.

“In addition to the extra staffing there is also a specific football intelligence function that is in place to monitor any increases in activity and feed into planning meetings and to help build the national picture.

"We want people to enjoy Euro 2016 but act responsibly.”

An increased police presence during the European Championships in areas where matches will be shown will ensure fans enjoy the tournament responsibly. In addition, Wiltshire Police has identified hot spots where neighbourhood policing teams will be on hand to distribute information and offer advice.

The policing operation means the additional staff will be deployed for particular matches, which have been assessed against the threat of disorder that they may pose.

While most people will be out to enjoy the football and have a good time, Wiltshire Police will be on the lookout for anyone in the town centre intent on spoiling the party.
