A GYM user was stunned when part of the roof of Springfield Leisure Centre in Corsham gave way and a hole appeared in the floor during his training session.

The weightlifter, who did not want to be named for fear of being banned from the gym, said the roof fell through on the afternoon of Saturday, August 27.

He said: “I was in Springfields Leisure Centre doing weight training when the roof gave way. It didn’t collapse but it gave way and there didn’t appear to be any joists around the roof.

“The floor gave way too. There was an old chap with a medicine ball bouncing away and the floor gave way and a big hole appeared. They are still allowing people to walk over it. I am a bit astounded that they put heavy weights on a wooden floor on the first floor in the first place.

“It happened so quickly. I pointed it out to someone in the centre but nothing was done for a while.

“I have never known a place to be repaired so much. It is a bit mad really."

Although the gym remains open and the affected area cordoned off, the gym user, who was frustrated he cannot use all of the facilities including the weights, was also annoyed as he had his request for a part refunds turned down as Wiltshire Council has said it is working on the issues.

A council spokesman said: “The free weights area at the campus is currently out of action due to a ceiling leak. The contractor will be repairing the area as soon as possible and we apologise for any inconvenience this is causing.

“In the meantime, we are looking at how the weights area of the gym can be provided elsewhere in the campus.”

Contractors have already been called out to work on the roof. As the campus is still under contract warranty the repairs will be fixed at no cost to the council.
