A new group for young musicians has given its first-ever performance at the Wiltshire Music Centre.

Around 14 youngsters aged 8 to 11 years took part in the Sound Lab session on Saturday, 8 July and the organisers hope to lay on more performances.

Ben Vleminckx, the director and founder of Evolve Music, who started the music ensemble, Sound Lab, said: “It was really good. We had a really good session.

“We have got enough funding from Wiltshire Music Connect through the Wiltshire Music Hub to plan another five sessions.

“If we can attract more funding we hope to keep going. It gives young people the opportunity to make and create their own music.”

Evolve Music is a relatively new charity set up by Ben and his wife Beth. They launched Sound Lab - a new creative ensemble for 8-14 year olds in Wiltshire – back in March.

At the first session, 16 young musicians turned up. Now they have 20-22 attending each practice session.

Ben said: “Sound Lab has proven to be very popular with young people, allowing them to create their own music as part of a group and explore instruments.

“Over four sessions, young musicians from across Wiltshire have explored music making through improvisation and have composed new pieces from scratch.”

Sound Lab was launched in response to the Take Note survey carried out by Wiltshire Music Connect last year.
