Drivers intending to travel on the M4 this weekend are being advised to plan their journeys ahead of full overnight closures.

The motorway will be closed for up to 11 hours overnight while Network Rail carries out work on the railway line over the motorway.

A Highways England spokesman said: "The electrification upgrade work involves installing overhead line equipment on Blue Bridge between junctions 19 and 20, and will be carried out under overnight closures of both eastbound and westbound carriageways, starting on Friday, November 3.

"The motorway will be closed from 11pm on Friday, November 3 until 7am on Saturday, November 4, from 9pm on the Saturday to 8am on Sunday, November 5 and from 10pm on Sunday night until 5am on Monday, November 6.

"Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place, and Highways England is advising drivers to allow extra time for their journeys during the weekend closures.

"Traffic travelling westbound on the M4 will be diverted at junction 19, and follow a solid black triangle diversion route via the M32, A4174, A38 and M5, returning to the M4 at junction 20.

"Eastbound M4 traffic will be diverted via junction 20 on the reverse black square route, while M5 traffic wishing to access the M4 eastbound will follow the same diversion route from junction 16."
