AN award-winning West Wiltshire pie-maker is to donate 200 pies to raise more than £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Alex Joll, of Eat Square, of Unit 4, Woolley Grange Farm, Bradford on Avon, won a bronze award at this year’s British Pie Awards for his free from Steak & Ale pie. He has previously won two silver and highly commended awards at the Taste of the West Awards.

Now he and his Spanish wife, Salome, 50, who was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago this Christmas, are organising a free pie, mash and gravy Christmas dinner for 200 diners. It will take place on Wednesday, December 6, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, at St Margaret’s Hall in Bradford on Avon.

Entry is free but Alex and Salome are asking for a £5 donation to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. There will also be a raffle.

Alex, 50, from Bradford on Avon, said: “Salome was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago this Christmas and since then we have raised funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“The treatment at the Royal United Hospital in Bath has been fantastic and that has always been supported by Macmillan Cancer Support. It has been a long tough journey but throughout Macmillan helped us and now we want to help them.

“Last year, we organised a mince pie and mulled wine event. This year, we’re planning the free pie, mash and gravy Christmas dinner. I’ll be preparing 200 pies and we’re hoping that more than 150 people will book tickets or turn up on the day with a £5 donation.”

Once inside, guests will be able to enjoy their free pie and mash with gravy as well as mulled wine and mince pies, a full bar stocked with local ale and cider, and a mini Christmas Market.

Alex and Salome launched Eat Square just over three years ago in 2014 in Bradford on Avon. They now make 300 pies a day and serve customers within a 50-mile radius with a wide range of pies.

Flavours include steak & ale, chicken & mushroom, pork & chorizo, chicken & leek, roast vegetable and gluten free. The company also produces traditional pasties and sausage rolls.

Tickets for the Christmas dinner can be obtained online for free at www.eatsquare.co.uk (they are limited so be quick!).
