Differences remain in the time it takes to send an ambulance to rural and urban areas.

Latest figures show Great Western Ambulance Service (GWAS) did not meet the 75 per cent target in sending an ambulance to a life threatening incident within eight minutes in Wiltshire.

The service achieved a response of 68.6 per cent in Wiltshire compared to 89.9 per cent in Swindon.

But due to it over achieving the target in towns and cities it achieved the 75 per cent target overall across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Avon.

GWAS has recruited more community first responders (members of the public who are trained to use a defibrillator) in rural areas to help.

At a joint scrutiny meeting of GWAS Wiltshire councillor Mike Hewitt said: "I congratulate you on improving the figures from four or five years ago when this committee was set up. I think there’s a bit more room for improvement somewhere along the line."
