Thousands get a glimpse of Wiltshire's heritage

Thousands of visitors took a rare glimpse inside some of Wiltshire’s most beautiful buildings during the annual Heritage Open Days.
The festival, over the weekend, celebrated England’s architecture and culture by offering free access to places usually closed to the public or with admission charges.
A highlight in Corsham was guided walks through the historic town, on Friday and Saturday, led by historian Dr Negley Harte.
He said: “It is very good to see such a large crowd coming out and wanting to find out more about Corsham. There a lot of myths about Corsham’s history and it is good to be able to pass on a little insight to the group.”
Other town events included a talk by author Nick McCamley, whose book Secret Underground Cities, details the mysterious history of tunnels and ammunition depots under Corsham and Monkton Farleigh.
On Sunday, visitors had the opportunity to explore Hartham Estate chapel – designed by PC Harwick in 1862 – and the medieval Church of St Christopher in the nearby village of Box.
Michael Rumsey, Corsham Civic Society’s chairman, said: “I think we have done very well with this year’s events, as it is always hard to offer something different year after year.”
Trowbridge offered a wide range of activities to visitors, with the Town Hall, the Blind House, the Masonic Hall and four of the town’s churches all taking part in the Heritage Open Days.
