A tree grower in Winsley is hoping one of his prize specimens will grace Downing Street this Christmas.
Nick Durnford, 36, who runs Fine Pines of Church Farm, will be taking part in the British Christmas Tree Growers’ Association contest at the Berkshire College of Agriculture in Maidenhead on Tuesday.
The winner will supply a Christmas tree to stand outside 10 Downing Street in London during December.
Mr Durnford, who has been growing Christmas trees for almost 20 years, said: “I’m a member of the BCTGA and I’ve been growing Christmas trees since I left college.
“This is my first year entering and there’s pretty tough competition, because they are all professional growers from throughout the UK.
“I’m hopeful, though, because I’ve got some really cracking trees.”
He will take some of his trees, between seven and eight years old and which have to be between 1.8m and 2.2m in height, for the competition, which is expected to have about 100 entries.
Mr Durnford added: “It’d be very good to win and you get to go to Downing Street and install it, so that would be good as well.”
