Royal Mail have announced Bradford on Avon’s golden post box is set to stay permanently, to honour the Olympic success of kayaker Ed McKeever.

The post box in The Shambles was painted gold this summer to celebrate the former St Laurence pupil’s London 2012 success in the K1 200m kayak. The golden paint job was initially intended as a temporary modification, but the Royal Mail today confirmed all 110 golden boxes across the country will remain as a permanent tribute. It will be the first time the distinctive red colour of British post boxes has ever been changed.

A plaque will also be installed on the box, as a reminder of Mr McKeever’s gold medal triumph in this summer’s Olympic Games.

Moya Greene, Chief Executive Officer, Royal Mail Group, said: "We are delighted at the way people took to this simple idea.
"The gold post boxes gave communities even more opportunity to mark the successes of Team GB and Paralympics GB - and became a part of local celebrations of London 2012 across the UK. I am pleased to confirm that these post boxes will be kept gold permanently."
