Nearly 300 children in Hallowe’en costumes descended on The Shires shopping centre in Trowbridge for a trick or treat trail around the shops during half-term on Wednesday collecting sweets on their travels.

Accompanied by their mums and dads youngsters up to the age of 12 were invited to pick up a bag from The Sweet Shop at the Castle Street entrance to The Shires between 2pm and 4pm and were able to visit 45 stores where they were given more treats.

Shopping centre manager Sarah-Louise Moore said: “We wanted to organise something for Halloween during half-term and this seemed ideal.

"The children were able to ‘trick or treat’ in a completely safe environment and in the dry. They all dressed up, visited all the shops and went away with bags full of sweets.

“The response was tremendous. It was the first time we had organised something like this and I think everyone went away happy, including the parents. Many shop staff dressed up in Hallowe’en costume as well which was great and we’re already talking about doing it again next year.”

About 50 children stayed on and lined up for the fancy dress competition, judged by Miss Moore and Cherry Robionson from The Sweet Shop, later in the afternoon.

Winners were brother and sister Olivia, 10, and Beau, eight, Gardner and their friend Abby Drew, nine, all from Trowbridge, who shared a £40 voucher to spend at Sports Direct.

Second was Benjamin Crichton, eight, who received a £25 voucher from Stationery Plus and third was two-year-old Stephanie Hallett, dressed as a pumpkin, who won books from Waterstones.
