Road improvements to three important trunk routes in southern Wiltshire have been debated by MPs and councillors at a meeting in Mere.

Andrew Murrison, the MP for South West Wiltshire, said Saturday’s meeting was organised to establish local priorities and he was keen to improve safety on both the A36 and the A350 near Warminster.

He was joined by North Dorset MP Robert Walter, Yeovil MP David Laws, MEP for South West England Giles Chichester and local councillors.

“We were looking at how we can improve the local road infrastructure where the counties meet, where we have a common interest,” said Dr Murrison.

“Particularly, the desire by many to dual the A303 in the areas where it is currently single carriageway, in order to ease congestion.

“My priority will be looking at how we can improve safety on all these roads, particularly the A36, and how to ease congestion around Westbury.”

The MP emphasised that there was no “quick fix” to the problems on these roads, but he would like to see short-term action taken to improve safety at accident blackspots.

He also said the group would include the Westbury bypass proposals in its considerations.
