Walker is rescued from river

A DOG walker spent 20 minutes in bitterly cold water after falling into the River Avon in Chippenham on Thursday night when he tried to rescue his pet.

The 24-year-old slipped and fell into the river near Sadlers Mead just after 10.30pm.

He was rescued after a woman heard cries for help and called 999.

The man had reached the end of Baydons Lane when police and ambulance crews dragged him out of the water at 11pm. He was cold but unhurt.

His dog was found safe and well and returned home.
