Car fire causes three-hour road closure on A303

A car with a man and three children in set on fire last night (February 24) at 10.30pm, after colliding with a crash barrier as it headed east on the A303 between Zeals and Mere.
The vehicle, a black Alfa Romeo, caught fire near the B3095 junction at Lower Zeal after hitting the crash barrier. The driver and the three children escaped the car with no injuries.
The driver, from Southampton, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of excess alcohol, but he was released just after midnight with no further police action.
A fire crew from Mere attended the scene and the fire was put out by 11.20pm. The road was cleared and reopened at 1.52am.
