Who said Elvis was dead? He seemed very much alive at Henford House for the Valentine’s Party.

Elvis impersonator Willard Ford not only spent the afternoon with the residents, staff and guests, he had them wiggling their hips and singing along to all his songs.

Valentine’s Day started with a special guest at lunchtime, when Major Mark Thurley, who serves with the Royal Artillery and is a volunteer visitor at the home, arrived to add a little romance.

He came bearing a bouquet, from which he picked and presented a single red rose to each of the ladies. He then joined the home’s new manager, Joyce Jones, and residents for a delicious lunch prepared by the chef.

Activities co-ordinator Natalie Fletcher said: “What a fantastic afternoon we all had.

“All the ladies were starry-eyed. Willard had us all fooled. He brought so much fun into our home and he was so good at his act. Just for a few hours, we all believed he was the real thing.”

After the dancing and singing, Elvis joined the manager to present Olympic torch bearer Nic Noble with a cheque for a £100, from two raffles, for Pink Positive, which she set up in memory of her sister, who died of cancer.

As a finale, residents, staff and guests watched red balloons, carrying their messages for loved ones, float into the distance.

Ms Fletcher said: “It is always an emotional time, especially when we release the balloons, sending them up to heaven.”

The event followed fun on Shrove Tuesday, when residents took turns at tossing pancakes, sometimes with hilarious results. Afterwards, a batch of fresh pancakes was on the menu, much to everyone’s delight.
