Warminster Park pavilion cafe project gets funds boost

£10,000 never spent on a play area will be used by the town council to turn the old tennis pavilion into a cafe in Warminster Park.

Wiltshire Council, which owns the pavilion, had agreed to pay £15,000 towards bringing it back to a reasonable state of repair, including adding disabled access.

However, the total cost for renovation and conversion of the dilapidated pavilion came to £34,500, which left a shortfall of £19,500.

The Friends of Warminster Park had £10,000 in reserves for the conversion project.

Councillor Pip Ridout requested that the town council’s finance and assets committee put £10,000 towards conversion, money originally earmarked for the Grovelands play area.

The play area plan has been on hold since 2007, due to disputes over land ownership and the committee agreed it was unlikely any progress would be made.

Cllr Ridout abstained from voting, as she was making the application as the chairman of Friends of Warminster Park.

Mayor Rob Fryer said: “This has been a long and difficult battle and it is great that progress can be made.”

Planning permission has been applied for and it is hoped work can start by June.
