Corsham firefighters' charity challenge for former colleague

First published in Latest News

Corsham firefighters are taking on a gruelling challenge on Sunday, April 14 to raise money for two charities supporting a former colleague.

The crew will walk 22 miles along the Kennet & Avon Canal towpath between Devizes and Bath – wearing full fire kit, including breathing apparatus cylinders.

The aim is to raise as much money as possible for the Fire Fighters Charity and the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Former Corsham firefighter Martin O’Shea – who served for almost 15 years with Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service – was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year.

Twenty firefighters will be taking part in the challenge over the day, with seven walking and wearing BA sets at any time. The team will set off from the Black Horse in Devizes at 8am and they hope to reach Bath Spa station by 6pm.

Corsham firefighter Paul Clifford is one of the event’s organisers and said: “Martin gained many friends while working in the fire service, and was well respected by his colleagues and his community.

"Because of this, we felt we needed and wanted to do our bit to help him and his family during this difficult time.

"We decided to raise money and awareness for MNDA and the Fire Fighters Charity, as the support Martin has received from both charities has made a considerable difference.”
