Hilperton flower show a real credit to late stalwart
Competitors in this year’s Hilperton Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Show had a blooming good time on Sunday.
The annual event, which took place at Hilperton Village Hall, was the first to be held after former organiser Gill Gibbons, 76, died in January.
The Friends of Hilperton Allotments took over the running of this year’s competition to ensure the popular event continued for its 14th year.
Melissa Reeves, from Friends of Hilperton Allotments, said: “Gill had been running the event with her husband Dick for many years and he was pleased to see someone take it on.
“It was a lot of hard work to get it going, especially taking something on which has been run so successfully, but we had a lot of fun.
“It was really great to have a good mixture of ages and those who were taking it seriously and those who just wanted to have a bit of fun.”
Apart from the traditional categories, the event also had a novelty class which included contests for the funniest misshapen vegetable, herb garden in a container and heaviest apple.
