Romeo Romeo Romeo and Romeo perform Shakespeare in Holt
4:59pm Wednesday 14th August 2013 in Latest News
O Juliet, Juliet wherefore art thou Juliet will be the call when an all-male performance of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet takes place at Holt’s The Courts Garden at 7pm on Saturday.
The HandleBards, will have cycled a mammoth 926 miles when they complete their 27 date tour which they began in Glasgow, on July 2, and will finish in London, on August 23.
The HandleBards, who consist of Callum Cheatle, 22, Tom Dixon, 22, Paul Moss, 22, and Callum Brodie, 24, decided to cycle to their venues after being inspired by a friend who did a charity fundraiser, from Land’s End to John O’Groats, last year.
The group, who rotate between performing Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night, have no women members with the men taking on the female roles.
Mr Cheatle, originally from Kenya, who plays Romeo opposite Mr Moss as Juliet, said: “The tour has been really good, we tend to cycle about 30 miles between performances, carrying all of our costumes which can be pretty tiring.
"We’ve really enjoy touring together, we’ve got to know each other so much better, and we feel like the theatre equivalent of One Direction but not as good looking.”
Mr Cheatle, who graduated from the University of Durham, said that by cycling, the group, who are part of the Peculius theatre company, have saved 20.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
He said: “The bikes are always on stage but we don’t tend to use them as anything other than bikes but they are sometimes incorporated into the performance. We are really looking forward to performing in Wiltshire.”
The HandleBards who have cycled around 750 miles so far, hope to cycle across Europe with their production next year.
Jane Stephenson Ingram, The Courts Garden’s visitor experience co-ordinator, said: “This is a rare chance for visitors to experience the garden in the evening as well as a unique production.”
