Council leader convinced closure of Trowbridge Birthing Centre will be temporary
11:00am Saturday 17th August 2013 in Latest News
Jane Scott, the leader of Wiltshire Council, has been convinced that Trowbridge Birthing Centre will fully reopen to expectant mothers after a meeting with the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Concerned by the health trust’s decision to stop births at the unit, at Trowbridge Community Hospital, from July 15 until the end of September, Cllr Scott met members of the trust and Dr Stephen Rowlands, the chairman of the Clinical Commis-sioning Group.
The trust, which oversees seven maternity units, has sent Trowbridge’s midwives to cover at other centres which are understaffed during the closure.
Cllr Scott said: “I’m satisfied that it was closed for safety reasons and they are confident that it will be fully open from September 30.
“I challenged them on whether there are plans in place for further closures and they assured me that there are not.”
The Trowbridge Birthing Centre is not fully closed this summer, remaining open for postnatal and antenatal care. Mothers due to give birth at the centre have been sent to other units.
The National Childbirth Trust has expressed concerns that the trust allowed staff levels, especially at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, to drop to a level where another unit had to suffer.
Elizabeth Duff, the NCT policy leader, said: “Being told your chosen place of birth is not available is stressful and can have worrying implications; having to travel further in labour and being cared for by unfamiliar staff.
“It is crucial that birthing centres and maternity services across the nation are as well staffed as possible.”
The trust aims to hire nine new midwives in preparation for the reopening of the Trow-bridge Birthing Centre in Sept-ember.
