Thieves make off with Melksham charity cash
Thieves who stole a charity collection from a Melksham hair salon have been branded “disgusting” by the salon’s shocked owners.
Lyndsey Yarwood opened the Elleness Salon on Roundponds on Wednesday morning to find that the till had been cleared out and her Cancer Research collection bucket emptied.
She said: “We were collecting sponsorship for a skydive I was due to do this weekend for Cancer Research, as I lost three grandparents to cancer last year.
“It’s just disgusting, stealing from a charity box. Our takings are covered by the insurance, but the thieves must have known they were taking from the charity. They’ve got no conscience.”
About £300 was taken from the bucket, along with around £700 worth of stock and takings from the second-floor salon.
Co- owner Sophie Hellyer said: “They must have got a ladder and gone through the window; they knew what they were going for.”
The two stylists have owned the salon for less than a year, but have been overwhelmed by the support shown by customers.
Miss Hellyer said: “We opened back up on Wednesday as we were fully booked all day, and luckily our clients have been very generous with new donations.”
PC Barry Dalton of Wiltshire Police said: “A ladder likely to have been used in this offence had been thrown in the overgrown verge opposite the premises, and was found by a member of the public later in the day.
“If anyone has knowledge about those responsible or where this ladder was taken from, they should get in touch with the police on 101.”
