Canal and towpath reopened after Sells Green blaze
6:28pm Saturday 7th September 2013 in Latest News
The Kennet & Avon canal and towpath have been reopened at Sells Green, between Melksham and Devizes following a fire yesterday.
Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service was called to Hillview Farm at 2.28pm yesterday nd found three separate workshop units ablaze within a 100m x 50m building.
Two of the units were destroyed by the fire, and it was also confirmed that the affected building contained a number of acetylene, propane and argon cylinders, which led to a safety cordon being put into place.
This resulted in the canal and towpath being closed as a precaution.
Six fire crews – from Devizes, Trowbridge, Calne, Bradford on Avon, Corsham and Ludgershall – initially tackled the blaze, supported by a water carrier from Pewsey and an incident command vehicle from Devizes.
Relief crews remained at the scene until just after 10pm, when the site was declared safe and the cordon lifted.
A fire investigation is under way but the cause is believed to be accidental
