Tale of Trowbridge cat burglar
A thieving tabby keeps his young owner and her schoolmates constantly amused by his thieving ways as he has a particular fondness for stealing dog toys from neighbouring pooches.
Over the last two years, 10-year-old Elle Peacock’s pet, Gizmo, has been bringing home “gifts” for his family, including a cauliflower, profiteroles, a swimming hat, a draught excluder, an orange toy dolphin, a purple toy octopus and dog toys.
Elle, a pupil at The Mead School, in Hilperton, wrote to the Wiltshire Times to expose Gizmo’s anti-social antics.
She said: “Gizmo isn’t any ordinary cat, Gizmo is a thieving cat. I just find it so weird that he brings this stuff home. Last week he even brought home a Christmas toy.
“Me and my parents find it really strange and I tell all my friends and my teacher at school what he gets up to.”
Elle, who lives with mum and dad Jane and Derek in Bellefield Crescent, has had Gizmo and his brother, Smokey, for six years.
She said: “Smokey is a lot quieter than Gizmo and doesn’t bring things back.
“I really don’t know why Gizmo does it, as he doesn’t take any interest in the stuff when he brings it back.”
Her parents are proud of her for showing her creative talents to draw attention to Gizmo’s antics. Mrs Peacock said: “Elle just turned round one day and said, ‘I want to write to the newspaper about Gizmo and tell everyone what he does’.”
The family has kept some of the items Gizmo has found and would be happy to return them to their rightful owners.
