Bid to top best ever year for Operation Christmas Child
6:00pm Saturday 5th October 2013 in Latest News
AFTER a record-breaking 2012, Operation Christmas Child is returning and the Wiltshire Times is backing this year’s appeal to be the best one yet.
Last year, people across the county donated more than 25,000 gift-wrapped shoeboxes, loaded with gifts and toys, which were transported to disadvantaged children in Africa and Eastern Europe.
The appeal is run by the Samaritan’s Purse charity, with every box going via its Melksham depot.
Area coordinator Hilary McFall, who oversees them all, said: “I want to say a big thank you very much for all the wonderful support from the people of Wiltshire.
“The children love the shoeboxes and, when the reports come back of their excitement, it makes all the work worthwhile.
“Last year was great and we’re looking to beat that now, but every box we get is a bonus.”
This year’s campaign is launched tomorrow, with an open day at the depot, for potential volunteers.
Mrs McFall said: “We’ll be packing up the first shoeboxes. We’re also having a competition, to see who can wrap a box the quickest.”
The open day is from 10am to 2pm, at 12 Herc-ules Way, Bowerhill.
