Ticket to ride into our past from Warminster
Amid the worst weather conditions since its formation, Warminster Vintage Bus Running Day pulled in the crowds on Sunday for the free service from the town centre.
The annual event, started in 1994, provides a chance for transport enthusiasts to recreate bus trips as they were in West Wiltshire in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, mostly on restored vehicles.
This year 38 historic vehicles took to the roads on 16 routes, with most starting and finishing near the train station.
Routes served Frome, Westbury and Mere, with buses also passing through villages including Codford, Sutton Veny, Horningsham and Chitterne.
Organising committee president Bob Eade said: “As far as attendance and number of vehicles available, I would consider it a success, although it was a shame that the weather took a turn for the worse.
“However, everyone was still very enthusiastic and most people were happy to go for free rides here, there and everywhere.
“I think the residents of places in and around Warminster really look forward to the running day and they always show their support.
“We also get regular enthusiasts who travel long distances to be here.
“It’s the first event since we started, in 1994, where we have had really bad weather.
“We have a pretty good track record with the weather, but nothing can stop people enjoying the vintage buses.”
