Drumming teacher Bruce Treasure is back on the road with punk band Subhumans, 32 years after their first Trowbridge gig.

The anarcho-punk four piece, formed in Wiltshire in 1980, returned to their old stomping ground for a one-off gig at the White Swan in Church Street, Trowbridge, on Tuesday. It was organised by landlady and former roadie Bee Stacey-Brown.

Guitarist Mr Treasure said: “It’s been a long time since we played in Wiltshire, but we had a day off from our tour and needed to fill it. Bee’s a great friend, who booked us a slot.

“There is always a bit of a buzz around Trowbridge, as that’s where we started. Our second show was in Trowbridge Park.”

He met bassist Phil and drummer Trotsky when they attended Kingdown School, Warminster, and formed the band after meeting vocalist Dick Lucas, of Melksham.

They released six studio albums, including 1983’s lauded From the Cradle to the Grave, and have gigged in the UK and US since re-forming in 1998.

Mr Treasure said: “We got back together to play the States. Now we go several times a year; there’s a big fan base in LA.

“We’re going to be playing a festival in Texas next year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of From the Cradle, where they want us to play it in its entirety.”

Away from touring, he works part-time as a music teacher at his old school and from his home in Westbury.

He said: “Live music is quite big at the moment, and punk is just as popular as it ever was.”

The band will play Bristol’s Exchange tomorrow, at 7.30pm.
