Wiltshire Council drafted in extra teams to help clear trees and roads following Monday night’s storm in Wiltshire.

Twenty extra crews have been working since flooding hit the region on Christmas Eve, and have responded to more than 80 storm-related phone calls.

Some roads are still closed and the old bridge at Bradford on Avon is likely to remain closed to traffic until after Boxing Day to allow waters to subside and structural engineers to assess if there has been any damage to the bridge.

More rain is predicted tonight so the bridge will remain closed to motorists and pedestrians.

Motorists are being advised to take alternative routes until further notice while pedestrians can use the nearby footbridge to cross the river.

John Thomson, cabinet member for highways said: “We understand the closure of the bridge does inconvenience people but it’s important we put safety first and until we can confirm the structural safety of the bridge it will be closed.

“Our teams have been working closely with partner organisations to keep the highways clear and also to help people who have been affected by flooding and we will continue to do so.”

To report a highway issue, go online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/highwaysreportingform or call 01225 777234.

Updates on road conditions are given through the council’s @WiltshireWinter twitter account. People can follow this for up-to-date information during any adverse weather.
