PARALYMPIC swimmer Kate Grey visited a new project at Larkrise School to learn about how it is increasing young disabled people’s involvement in sport.

Team Bath member Kate, who won a silver medal at the 2008 Paralympic Games, came to the school – which teaches children with disabilities and learning difficulties – to see pupils practise for a performance in the West Wilts Dance Festival.

The swimmer visited as part of Sky Sport’s Living for Sport programme, in which stars visit schools to run workshops.

Trowbridge triathlete Rachel Bown, a PE teacher at Larkrise for nine years, said: “Kate was so lovely and she was really good with the children and she was genuinely interested in the school and helping them.”

The children will perform their festival routine in Bath in February.

In September, Miss Bown became the region’s representative for Project Ability, run by the Youth Sport Trust, which aims to improve the opportunities for young people with disabilities to take part in competitive sport.

"The trust has given Miss Bown and her team £7,000 to set up projects at the school, as well as allowing her to produce inclusive programmes and workshops at other schools in Wiltshire and Swindon.

Miss Bown said: “I think this is the pinnacle of my career, as I’m really pleased to be helping so many children develop.”

Larkrise is one of 50 schools in the country involved with Project Ability and the teacher hopes businesses will sponsor the programmes, to allowing it to run more activities.

So far, her team has raised £800 with a 5k run series. To offer sponsorship, call 01225 761434.
